Dentures are best referred to as removable false teeth used as a replacement of missing teeth and also surrounding tissues. In addition to that, dentures prevent teeth from moving either side as they try to fill the available gaps between the gums. In some cases, all teeth need to be replaced.

Different Denture types
There are two different types of dentures: Complete/ full and partial dentures. The denture function and fit highly depends on the type chosen. Complete dentures
Full or complete dentures are used by patients who need all their upper (maxillary arch) or lower (mandibular arch) teeth replaced.
Partial dentures
Partial dentures are used by patients who have either one or a few of their teeth missing. It can either be tooth supported, or tissue (gum) and tooth supported. These dentures do not cause any damage to the available natural teeth. These dentures are effective in preventing your natural teeth from getting out of alignment by either drifting or shifting trying to occupy the space left behind by natural teeth. Partial dentures help preserve the positioning of your natural teeth as well as provide them with extra support. You’ll be able to chew better and improve your smile and facial appearance.
Different Denture Materials
When it comes to the denture material, the position, number of teeth remaining and stability greatly determines what type of material should be used. Dentures can be made from different materials.
Chrome and Acrylic Dentures
Dentures made from chrome and acrylic are commonly referred to as cast partial. Metal dentures have a more permanent and rigid style. Chrome is used for dentures because it is very strong, light and ultra thin. This makes it more comfortable and less bulky in your mouth. Acrylic dentures on the other hand are slightly more bulky and can be less comfortable, although the mouth does adjust to them. They are cheaper than chrome so are still a good option. Acrylic dentures can be permanent but are also efficient as temporary or transitional replacement of missing teeth, determined best by personal preferences and circumstances.
Denture procedure
Complete dentures
Complete Dentures are fitted in the event that all your lower or upper teeth need to be replaced or make changes to an old denture. They are designed to fit over the jawbone and gum by using a freshly coloured acrylic base. The upper base of the denture covers the roof of the mouth, while, the lower base of the denture accommodates the tongue thanks to its horseshoe shape design.
Fitting of complete dentures depends on whether you are getting a custom or immediate type. Custom dentures are designed after the removal of teeth and the healing process of the gum is underway. It is best fitted approximately 3-6 months after the teeth have been removed. On the other hand, immediate dentures are fitted immediately after your tooth/teeth are removed. This makes it easier as you won’t be required to stay without teeth. The problem is that following a tooth removal, your gums change and your bone level moves so your new denture may not fit properly in a couple of months. This is fixable by getting a denture reline, but you may need this several times to get the right fit. Immediate dentures are sometimes considered temporary solutions awaiting the final fitting of custom dentures.
To get the best fitting denture results, you need to let gums heal months ahead of the fitting. The fitting procedure is conducted by your Dentist, who takes mouth impressions and measurements.The dentures are custom constructed by the dental technician. The mouth impressions and measurements taken help make a trial denture in wax. Your Dentist will use this trial denture on your mouth to assess its appearance and fitting. Any adjustments such as shape and colour can be made before the final denture is provided.
Partial dentures
Partial dentures are used when you just have a few missing teeth. Partial dentures are made of a gum coloured plastic base that is attached to replacement teeth and uses a metal framework to attach onto natural teeth. A fixed bridge is used to place crowns onto either side of the natural teeth and fixing artificial teeth onto them. Partial dentures are removable and are designed with internal attachments instead of clasps fastened to adjacent crowns that give a more comfortable feel and natural looking appearance.
