Tooth Extractions

Cheap Denture Gold CoastA visit to the dentist has always been perceived as a possibly painful experience. The probability of needing certain dental procedures such as tooth extractions and root canals has deterred many from seeking the proper dental care that is needed. Tooth extractions can be a tolerable process if it is performed by dentists that will use professional, soft and gentle care. Why do teeth need to be extracted?

Dental care should be a top priority when it comes to the overall health of your body. Unfortunately, some people, for whatever reason, don’t get the preventative dental care (such as exam & cleans and fillings) that is needed to avoid decaying of teeth. This is one of the reasons that teeth need to be extracted – sometimes you get to the Dentist too late and the decay in your tooth has gone into the nerve. Sometimes a root-canal can save your tooth, but these can be quite expensive, so you might opt to extract. Sometimes the decay is so bad it has to be extracted.

Decayed or damaged teeth is not the only reason for having your teeth pulled. If you break or crack your tooth that cannot be salvaged, then a dentist would recommend having an extraction. In some situations, people have baby teeth that do not fall out which causes problems for their adult teeth, so the only solution is to remove the baby teeth. Cancer patients receiving certain types of radiation treatment, may need to have teeth removed before treatment begins or sometimes the treatment causes the decay. Wisdom teeth that are impacted or cause crowding to the surrounding adult teeth is another reason to have your tooth or teeth extracted.

What is involved in the extraction procedure/process

Cheap Tooth Extractions Gold CoastAn extraction is a fancy way of saying you’re having your tooth or teeth pulled. The process is a lot easier than most may think. Having a dentist that is experienced and cares about the condition of your mouth in a gentle way, makes the process more bearable. The entire process does require an experienced and knowledgeable dentist to be certain it is done correctly. If your dentist will be doing the removal, it is usually because it is a simple extraction. You will not feel any pain because local anesthetic will be applied the area being worked on. After it’s numb the dentist uses various dental tools to loosen and pull your tooth. However, if it is a more complex situation needing a surgical extraction, you might be referred to an oral surgeon.

Post extraction care

Following the extraction or removal procedure, you will receive detailed instructions for after care. It is important to refrain from smoking and eat soft foods, in order to prevent dry sockets, infections and irritating the extraction area. In most cases, after having a tooth pulled, the surrounding area may swell for a day or two. Placing an ice pack on the affected area will help reduce the swelling. To aid with the healing process, it is recommended to gargle with warm salt water (after waiting 24hours post-extraction). You may also be prescribed a pain reliever to take to reduce the pain, but usually basic Panadol or Nurofen is all you would need (if any). You want to avoid poking or prodding the area because it will delay the healing process.
